Skin Cancer Checks
We provide a convenient, accessible and affordable opportunity to receive early detection, diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and melanoma. We are committed to providing continuity of care and building long term relationships through high levels of patient satisfaction and service. Quality of service, superior health outcomes and raising community awareness of skin cancer prevention are our priorities. To enable early detection of melanoma, there needs to be regular self-monitoring and consultation including fully body examination with a doctor with special interest in skin cancer. If you are concerned about any moles or spots come in and have them checked by our committed professionals.
The Ear Doctor
The Ear Doctor (also known as Ear Infection Cairns) is part of the Toogood Road Medical Centre and has been created to provide experienced Microscopic Ear Toilet to the people of the far North. We have 2 ENT microscopes with Dr Balch and Dr Morgan-Terry providing the bulk of this care. We also have a teaching microscope and ear cameras to teach both our patients and young doctors working at our practice. See your own ear! Microscopic Ear Toilet or Microscopic suction cleaning is the preferred method for cleaning ears that are blocked, infected or damaged though injury. It is safer than ear syringing and the preferred method of ear cleaning amongst ear specialists. This is the teaching at Medical Schools in Australia. At the Ear Doctor the procedure is bulk billed, and no referral is needed. You may have to pay for the initial consultation, according to your circumstances.Acute otitis externa or tropical ear is a common problem in the far north and at times very painful. This can be confused with Otitis Media or middle ear infection. At The Ear Doctor we can diagnose your pain and efficiently help with ear toilet (when needed) and evidence based medication, giving quick and sustained improvement in most cases. Dr Balch has been the lead doctor in original research (yet to be published) on the treatment of acute otitis externa, with the help of many Cairns doctors.Hearing aids interrupt the normal migration of ear wax out of the ear resulting in a wax build up. Our doctors are able to efficiently remove this debris to allow optimum performance of your device, we recommend you have an ear toilet prior to seeing your audiologist for device service.A ruptured or perforated eardrum (tympanic membrane) is also common from a variety of causes, most cases will heal without surgery especially if careful microscopic cleaning and the correct medication are given. We are also happy to help with children, and have developed management strategies to treat children with very little discomfort. Our policy is to never restrain any patient or child for ear treatment, and we are proud to make friends with our little patients.Mastoid cavities, radiation damage (from cancer treatment), dermatitis of the ear , skin cancer of the ear and other more unusual conditions are also managed at The Ear Doctor.Specialist ENT referral can be arranged to a private ENT surgeon or the Cairns Hospital ENT department when needed.
Adult & Childhood Immunisations
We don't vaccinate just to protect our children. We also vaccinate to protect our grandchildren and their grandchildren. Vaccines are the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and even your community against many dangerous diseases. Vaccines are not just for children. In fact, according to data from the National Centre for Health Statistics, vaccine-preventable diseases (such as flu and pneumonia) now kill more adults than children. No one wants to get sick and miss weeks of work, school or spending time with family and friends. By getting vaccinated, you can stay healthier and prevent spreading disease to everyone around you. If your practitioner doesn’t bring up the topic of vaccines, be sure to ask. -Diseases that are almost unknown would stage a comeback. thanks to vaccines, some diseases are almost gone.
Mental Health
It’s an expression we use every day, so it might surprise you that the term ‘mental health’ is frequently misunderstood. ‘Mental health’ is often used as a substitute for mental health conditions – such as depression, anxiety conditions, schizophrenia, and others. According to the World Health Organization, however, mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.” But it’s important to remember that mental health is complex. The fact that someone is not experiencing a mental health condition doesn’t necessarily mean their mental health is flourishing. Likewise, it’s possible to be diagnosed with a mental health condition while feeling well in many aspects of life. Ultimately, mental health is about being cognitively, emotionally and socially healthy – the way we think, feel and develop relationships - and not merely the absence of a mental health condition.
